The Avenues of Flags at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery and St Joseph Catholic Cemetery are ready for another Memorial Day.
This year’s patriotic display honoring all those killed in military service to the country includes 124 new flags and dozens of other flags skillfully repaired by local volunteers.
Last year, rain over Memorial Day damaged several of the older, cotton flags. Jefferson park and recreation director Vicky Lautner launched a fundraising effort to replace those that were beyond repair.
The effort turned out to be one of the easiest fundraisers in many years and by late September, all funds needed were on hand.
According to Bill Berger of the Jefferson Elks lodge, the displays include 554 flags. Elks, Boy Scouts, Jefferson Kiwanians and Aktion Club members, veterans and more helped put the flags up Saturday. They’ll return late Monday afternoon to take them down again.
The cemeteries were busy places Saturday as families gathered to decorate the graves of loved ones.
